Giuseppe and Valeriya live far from each other: she in St. Petersburg, Russia, and he in Varese, Italy. So he arranged for her a surprise engagement session, to collect the memories of a romantic weekend they spent at the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore. I joined them at Isola Pescatori, where they were staying, and we started the shooting with a stroll through the narrow streets of the village and the lakeside walk. It was an early autumn afternoon with intense colors and a soft, golden light and there was almost nobody, so there was a perfect quietness that let them relax and enjoy the experience. When we ended up the walk we took the boat and reached the Isola Bella, surely the most spectacular of the three, with its Italian gardens adorned with statues and flowers. There we took some of my favorite pictures, including the cover one. The empathy of this couple was something magical: in every gesture I saw complicity and love and it was wonderful to know that my pictures have become solace to them in moments of nostalgia, something to look at to feel close even when they are not.
