Emily and Taylor planned a trip to Italy to celebrate their wedding anniversary and asked me to do a photo shoot in a typical Italian village. I gave free rein to my creativity and sent them a list of romantic, fascinating, very Italian scenarios. At the end of the list there was Orta San Giulio, a medieval village on the shores of Lake Orta which had been the privileged setting of many of my photo shoots and some of my most lovely personal stories. A place to which I am very attached and in which I spend most of my free time, running along the lake and kayaking on the blue water.
Orta San Giulio, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, really looks like a watercolor of God, as written by Werner. The lakeside walk that leads to the center is adorned by nineteenth-century mansions in the neoclassical style with gardens full of azaleas and camellias. You enter the village between elegant seventeenth-eighteenth century buildings with open galleries on the gardens sloping down to the lake.
The slate roofs of the houses, the shadow games and the silences of the alleys, the faint light of certain winter days on the lake or the glory of certain summer mornings, the domestic and mysterious space of the Sacro Monte like a tiny country of toys, the streets like veins of stone that descend to the edge of the water, the veils of mist that evaporate around the St. Julius island making it an enchanted fossil: the most romantic souls (as I am!) can’t help falling in love with the atmosphere of Orta San Giulio, where architectural styles are mixed, from Romanesque to Baroque, with no discordant notes.
I was impatient to show Emily and Taylor all this wonder and even more impatient to know their impression. They were enchanted by the scenario and so in love with the vibe of this place that they did not want to leave at the end of the day. Their photo shoot was wonderful: Emily had a radiant smile to illuminate her face, her joy was really infectious and Taylor was one of the most romantic husbands I’ve ever photographed. Thank you guys for such a lovely anniversary photo session!
